Bone, Calcium Disorders and Fracture Prevention
The density of your bones (how thick or thin they are) is a major predictor of whether you might end up with a fracture, which can be devastating to your quality of life. In high risk people (those with low levels of testosterone or estrogen, on high doses of steroids, with family histories of hip fractures or high levels of calcium in the blood) frequent bone density scans allow your doctor to find out if you would benefit from medications or other interventions to help prevent broken bones.
A combination of diet, exercise and medications can help to decrease your risk of falls and fractures.
Bone density scanning is a short procedure that takes an x-ray of your spine and hips. We measure the density of your bones using a state of the art Lunar Prodigy DXA scanning machine, then certified clinical densitometrists interpret the results and determine your risk of a fracture. We use this information, as well as laboratory results, to tailor a treatment plan for you.
